At Summercourt Academy, Art, Design, Music and Drama are interwoven through our Curriculum and form an intrinsic part of our termly projects. We use carefully selected resources from Access Art to support us with our Art provision and coverage across Summercourt.
Our Art intent is to inspire, engage and challenge pupils; equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent, create, develop and refine their own works of art, craft and design. The curriculum will offer all pupils the privilege of a broad developmental experience in both two and three dimensional art, together with the opportunities to enjoy, appreciate, discuss and critically respond to a variety of art, craft and design forms. The pupils will learn the necessary skills and build up an understanding of the way in which materials and media behave.
The art curriculum will stimulate and enable all pupils to develop the confidence to explore and enjoy all of which the visual arts and its unique experiences have to offer and in doing so build on and develop skills which are essential to lifelong learning.
We aim to ensure that all pupils experience and develop knowledge and skills in a range of art forms under the broad headings of:
- Literature - poetry, fiction, drama and storytelling
- Performing Arts - music, dance, drama and storytelling
- Visual Arts - craft, design, painting, sculpture, textiles and printmaking
- Arts expressed through the use of multi-media - photography and digital arts
Our Design and Technology intent is to encourage learners to think creatively in order to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At Summercourt Academy, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts and consider their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We aim, wherever possible, to link projects to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Learners are given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness and are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers so that they become lifelong learners.
Our Art Aims
To ensure that all pupils:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Our DT Aims
To ensure that all pupils:
- develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
- build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
- critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
Class 1 (EYFS/year1) shared their 'All About me' books to show their friends who lives in their house and who is part of their family. They then made family pebble pictures using pebbles and natural materials from the class 1 outdoor garden area.
Class 2 (year 1/2) explored mixing primary colours investigating which colours would be made whilst also then using the colours created to make symmetrical patterns. Pupils also experimented with using different brush types and shades of green and orange to create sunflower paintings inspired by Vincent Van Gogh.
Class 3 (year 3/4) invited their families into school to attend an Art Exhibition as the finale of their Autumn term project 'What is Art?'. It was wonderful to see the children able to share their learning and progress with so many visitors. Thank you to everyone who supported them.
Class 3 have been following the DT process (investigate, plan, design and make) during our project focusing on designing a T-Shirt with a message about how we can help change the world. Here are some of our wonderful designs. Watch this space for the finished products!
Class 4 (year5/6) linked their science, literacy and art knowledge during the autumn term. They drafted space-based setting descriptions, discussed and re-enacted the orbits of Earth and the moon and looked at the artwork of Chesley Bonestell - with a view to creating their own art based on his works.
In Expressive Arts and Design, the children in EYFS have regular opportunities to engage with the arts enabling them to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials.
During Design Technology, Class 2 pupils (year 1 and 2) tasted different ingredients in order to DESIGN a healthy wrap, which needed to include some protein, dairy products and vegetables or fruits. The next step involved pupils making a list of ingredients and identifying the equipment they would need to make the product.
MAKE: after designing their healthy wrap, pupils made the product using a variety of tools and equipment safely.
EVALUATE: the pupils evaluated their products against the design criteria, including its appearance, content and taste.
They then knew how to make it even better and tastier next time.
This learning links to the DT National Curriculum for KS1 where pupils are required to design, make and evaluate a product.
